What are the causes of skin tags?

Skin Tags are quite common, and anyone can develop this skin condition, irrespective of age, skin colour or race. But, there are a few causes that usually trigger the growth of skin tags in a person. First of which is diabetes or obesity. People having diabetes or obesity are more prone to develop skin tags than others. This is because obese or diabetics have more skin folds and creases on their skin surface than others, making them a major candidate for skin tags. Pregnant women are also prone to developing skin tags because of the hormone secretion taking place inside their body.

Illegal use of steroids may also be one of the causes of skin tags growth, as that may cause the collagen fibres present in your skin to bond and develop skin tags. Therefore, any form of steroid should only be taken if a medical practitioner has prescribed for the same.

Symptoms of skin tags

Skin tags, as we discussed earlier, are nothing but flaps of skin hanging from your body’s skin with the help of a connecting tissue. Although most of the skin tags have a size that ranges in few mm, some rare cases may witness the growth in inches. The number of skin tags appearing on a person’s body can range anywhere from one to hundred in number.  The body parts most prone to develop skin tags are your neck, armpits, eyelids and groin area though it is not limited only to these parts.

One of the most common causes of skin tags is that it appears on the body parts having more folds. Also, sunlight has an adverse effect on skin tags and people affected by it should try to avoid going out in sunlight during the hottest hours of the day, particularly between 10 AM to 2 PM. Even if going out during these hours is necessary, one should apply sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher to ensure proper care of the skin against sun rays.
